Rules to Remember When Buying & Caring for Rugs
If you buy the first rug that you like the look of for a room, you could end up with a rug that doesn’t fit well, gets dirty too quickly, or is even dangerous to your health. There are certain things to consider before buying and while caring for a new rug that will save you tons of time and money, ensuring that your new rug is just right and stays that way.
Measure the room
This one is pretty obvious, but still, people think they can eyeball the measurements. While this may work out, it’s an unnecessary risk. Measure the floor space you plan to put the rug on. Not just wall to wall, but include coffee tables, couches, and chairs that are in the area. Also, if you want space between the rug and a wall or other furniture, measure out what you think would look best.
You can never go wrong with durability
Rugs aren’t exactly the kind of thing you want to be replaced year after year, so if you’re stuck between a couple of choices, pick the most durable one. Especially if you plan to spend more money for a nicer rug, getting a durable one will make that investment worthwhile.
Consider foot traffic
A light rug can be beautiful, but if you put it in a heavy traffic area, that beauty won’t last long. Instead, it will become a source of frustration when you have to clean it every week. Consider how often people walk through the area and if they’re wearing shoes. High-traffic areas should get darker colored rugs, and low traffic areas can get by with a lighter colored rug.
Be wary of off-gassing
Similar to how a fresh paint job can make you feel light-headed after a while, a brand new rug could as well, depending on what it’s made of. A synthetic rug may give off evaporating chemicals that will make you feel sick. Natural fiber rugs won’t have this problem. If you want the synthetic rug anyway, you can let the rug air out in the sun for a few days to get rid of any evaporating chemicals.
Runners are a nice choice, too
If you looked at the foot traffic rule earlier and crossed runners off your list, don’t be so quick to do so. Being in the hallway, they will get more traffic and require more cleaning. However, it can be worth it if that runner transforms a bland hallway into something more inviting with some color and softness.
Tricks for getting pet hair out of a rug
Pet hair and rugs inevitably go hand-in-hand, but that’s not how you want it to be. Even the most powerful vacuums have trouble lifting out all of the pet hair, and it can even jam some vacuums. To reduce the amount of pet hair your vacuum has to handle, try using a rubber glove to take as much pet hair out as possible before vacuuming. The friction of the rubber and static electricity will make a good amount of the hair cling to the glove so that you can get rid of more of it.
